An explanation regarding Senator Stevens' letter of May 9th:

The National Air Traffic Controllers Union (NATCA) was negotiating with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) over a new contract that governs everything from pay and benefits to dress code while working. As things escalated and the esteemed union president (his blog here, it's HILARIOUS) started calling the FAA Administrator a poo-poo head. Literally. Not surprisingly, talks broke down with many major issues still unresolved - things like NATCA wanting the FAA to repay controllers' student loans, up to $60,000 per person - and this for a job that doesn't require a college degree. Then there's the FAA's attempts to bring controller pay back in line with the rest of the federal workforce, which is Horribly Insulting to NATCA. Federal law requires that the FAA submit their "last best offer" to the Congress for action. If the Congress does nothing, the "last best offer" goes into effect. So far, the Congress has done nothing, and NATCA is Horribly Afraid that future controllers may have less pay, may have to conform to a dress code, and may have to pay for college themselves.

So NATCA started the "Fair FAA Act" and started bullying all the controllers to jump on board. I personally called Senators Stephens and Murkowski and Rep. Young and told them that I am adamantly opposed to this attempt to circumvent federal law.

The letter from Stevens was his reply to that. He does not support the Fair FAA Act. Yay.

You can read more about the impasse here.

That is all for now.
